Morgan Samuel Price
Morgan Samuel Price was born in 1947 in Cleveland, Ohio. Her first nine years were spent in Ohio. In 1956 Morgan’s family moved to New Smyrna Beach, Florida their winter home. Morgan was enthralled with the roar of the ocean and the early morning scent of orange blossoms in the winter air. A fascination with the south blossomed. She attempted her first plein air paining in DeBary, FL in 1963 under the tutelege of artist Elliott McMurrough, who was a student of Henry Hensche.
Morgan’s love of the countryside was fueled by weekly trips into the rolling hills of Cuyahoga and Lake County, Ohio. Known for her use of dappled light the early inspiration was derived from the weekend car trips down county roads in
the rolling countryside. The trips to the Cleveland Museum of Art are some of the earliest memories of an awakening to the beauty of a brush stroke made by Dutch Artist, Frans Hals c. 1580-1666
Morgan graduated from Ringling School College of Art and Design in 1968 in Sarasota, FL. Her first employment as a professional artist was in Kansas City, Missouri with Hallmark Cards, Inc.
The artists who mentored Morgan were Loren Wilford, 1892-1972 a respected painter and the leading illustrator of his day in the 1920’s. Patricia Kirkeberg, a Professional artist in Florida took Morgan at age 15 under her wing. Ms. Kirkeberg studied with the leading artists of the 20 C. Don Kingman, Elliott O’Hara, Robert Brackman and George B. Bridgeman. Patricia Kirkeberg was well equipped to introduce Morgan to the world of an artist. After art school and an early career spent as an illustrator and art director, Morgan turned her attention to plein air painting. In 1972 Morgan opened her first studio in Ardmore, Oklahoma. In 1976 Morgan studied with Robert Carl Cogar who she credits as the most important mentor of her career. Mr. Cogar was a student of John F.Carlson, James E. Davis. From humble beginnings Morgan built the career she enjoys today.
